Johnathan and Lindsey Wasson are no strangers to New York state farming and agriculture. Both of them grew up on farms, developing a deep appreciation for the industry and knowledge that comes second nature to farm kids. The Burdett Exchange is a culmination of their love for locally grown goods and handmade items, each thoughtfully chosen—a fact that becomes apparent when you walk into their local market.
In 2021, when the old Burdett Fire House went up for sale, the Wassons became excited about the prospect of turning the historic building into a market, and a plan began to take shape. The old building was in need of restoration, but with Johnathan’s carpentry skills, he was able to renovate the building into a beautiful store with a mix of industrial and traditional market flair.
Johnathan grew up on the Arcangeli farm in Burdett and studied agricultural business at SUNY Cobleskill, giving him the skills he needed to run a successful agriculture based business. His family farm had been producing high-quality natural beef and pork, but the store offered an opportunity to sell directly to consumers in smaller quantities and increase their customer base. Lindsey, grew up on a 600-acre farm, where she helped manage her parents' farm stand as a child. After completing her Pharmacy degree, her career brought her to Watkins Glen. They met through mutual friends and with their similar backgrounds, it’s no wonder they fell in love. In 2024, they welcomed their sweet baby, Blair, into the family!
When Lindsey and Johnathan opened The Burdett Exchange in 2022, the focus was primarily on produce and meat. However, the store has since evolved, now offering everything you need to create great meals with quality ingredients. They have local breads and pastries delivered on Wednesdays and Fridays. Fresh-cut flowers, local pottery, macarons, quality pasta, a great selection of pickled goods, sauces, cheeses and honey are just a few of the items they carry. They are both passionate about seeking the best offerings from local producers, and it shows in their store.
The Burdett Exchange has helped breathe new life into Burdett. Having a market where locals and visitors alike can fill their fridges with quality ingredients is a blessing to visitors and locals alike. It has helped foster a downtown feel and offers shopping that feels good and supports local businesses. We are so thankful for their entrepreneurial spirit and excited to have them as members of South East Seneca!
